Straffan Butterfly Farm
The Straffan Butterfly Farm is one of Kildare’s most renowned tourist attractions. The farm is owned by locals Des and Iris Fox who offer visitors a fascinating look into the magical world of butterflies.
Highlights of the butterfly farm include the Tropical House, where you will view the entire life cycle of a butterfly, and the Exhibition Area where you can see butterflies from all over the world plus some live reptiles. There are many exciting activities for kids on site.
It costs just €5 per child and €25 for a family of five. We recommend that you check it out - 2015 is officially the final year that the farm will be open to the public after almost 30 years in operation.
The Steam Museum
This is a day trip with a difference. The Steam Museum is a redecorated church which once stood on site at the Inchicore Railway Works. View models of steam locomotives including two used in the late 19th century. You can also view impressive steam engines used in the industrial revolution, like the inverted duplex pumping engine used at the Jameson Distillery in Dublin.
The Steam Museum also run guided tours on request.
Irish National Stud & Gardens
The Irish National Stud provide a unique opportunity for children to get up close to horses in a relaxed environment. Children can view the many horses that are on the premises and even partake in some hands-on interaction with the stud’s miniature Falabella horses. Also on-site is the world famous Japanese Garden, an exquisite private garden built at the turn of the century, and St. Fiachra’s Garden, which features a fun-filled environment trail.
You can rest assured that you children will have an action-packed day exploring the stunning surroundings of two of Ireland’s most famous gardens!
